Here is a link to the article that I found online:
http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beauty/yay-french-elles-amazing-no-makeup-issue-and-why-american-mags-need-to-step-it-up-446538/
If you click the link, you will be able to see a couple of the photographs that the French magazine allowed in. The magazine chose to show the women's natural beauty, which is definitely there, but is very different than a woman with enhancements to her looks.
At one point in the article, Romolini writes, "honestly, French Elle's April '09 issue is not the first time our women's mags have been out-classed by the Europeans. Last year--in protest of the serious lack of diversity on catwalks, ads and in women's magazines--Italian Vogue published an all-black issue featuring models of color from around the world. It sold out in days."
Why is it that we feel we can't show real women in the American media? Real American women don't wear perfect make-up all of the time. In fact, real American women don't wear perfect make-up most of the time. Real American women are not only white. Whites may make up the majority, but they (we, since I am white) aren't all there is to America. I'm not sure why we refuse to show this in popular media because its not like we don't all already know this.

I completely agree with you. Why are most women afraid to leave the house without putting makeup on? I feel, as a woman that it is absurd that people view women differently with makeup than they do without. Ya, sure you look different but makeup is a coverup that hides some naturally beauty. Nobody in the world has perfect, flawless skin so people opt to wear makeup to cover blemishes and zits then go further to paint up their faces before stepping out into the sunlight.
ReplyDeleteAdvertisements and media have made women ashamed to not wear at least concealer and it makes it difficult for those women too busy with kids or running businesses feel bad about themselves or it being thought that they let themselves go just as the media has with body image. We women just can't win. We are either too fat, to curvy, too thin, pale, too tan, or something is the matter with our appearance. Can't we ever just be ourselves and look the way we do without criticism?
It is true that women have turned into freaks because of society. They feel never worthy or good enough. They feel like they need to be perfected into something they aren't, and the silly reality is that no one IS perfect. Perfection, unfortunately, does not exist. It is strange to see that no one is happy with what they have, it never seems to be enough. It is in our nature as flawed humans to always want more than we could or should get.
